Candida – What is it?

Have you heard of Candida? Most people haven’t.

Candida is a very common form of fungus, that lives ON and INSIDE OF the human body. It can be found on the skin, it can live inside the mouth (AKA Thrush), and in our Yoni’s (Yeast Infection).

When it’s at proper levels in the body, candida is a fungus that aids with nutrient absorption and digestion. We all have a “microbiome” of gut flora in our intestines, which consists of both good and bad bacteria. The good bacteria help to keep us healthy, our digestion regular, our immune systems strong, and keeps the overgrowth of the bad bacteria under control.

When there is an overgrowth of bad bacteria in our guts, it can lead to a Candida overgrowth, which is when it gets serious. An overgrowth of Candida can cause chronic health problems in the body, especially impacting our mental AND sexual health.


  • Recurring yeast infections, UTI’s or vaginal bacterial infections
  • Tiredness, fatigue, Brain-fog
  • Sinus infections – recurring and long-term
  • Digestive issues
  • Skin & Nail problems (i.e. acne, nail fungus)
  • Suppressed immune system
  • Diabetes
  • Anxiety, depression, moodiness
  • Low sex drive
  • Bloating/gas

So, what exactly causes Candida?  Many factors can contribute to an overgrowth of the bad bacteria in our guts, leading to Candida infections.


  • Diet – high in sugar, processed foods, refined carbohydrates, alcohol & caffeine
  • Antibiotic use – previous and current use
  • Birth control pill
  • Weakened immune system
  • High-stress lifestyle & environment

Candida is not a life-threatening condition, but if it isn’t treated, it can spread throughout the body through the blood, causing further chronic health issues. Once Candida is circulating throughout the body, it can affect vital organs like the brain and heart and cause more serious complications.

It’s also important to note that Candida doesn’t just impact women but can also happen in men as well.

      Oooh great question, but it’s a big answer! To summarize, good fats are important for hormonal and brain health, foods that increase the level of serotonin (the happy, feel-good hormone) like low-starch carbs. Foods that include Zinc like oysters or shellfish. Dark chocolate is great too! And a really good, balanced and healthy diet with lots of natural foods and fiber. I hope that helps!

    2. I’ve been having big pieces of white discharge (odourless) super itchy urethra and vulva, and I pee more frequently but no burning sensation for the past 6 months non stop and I’ve seen my doctor and tried all medication but nothing I feel like I’ll go crazy!

      Hi Katie, that’s a great question! No I would not recommend the diet while you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. It’s a big change on your b ody and the antifungal supplement protocol is not good to take while you’re pregnant/breastfeeding. You can start doing your research and learn about the diet while you’re pregnant, to prepare you for when you’re ready after you’ve had the baby/finished breastfeeding.
